Bordeaux, to the South, famous for its architecture, and of course, wine. Excellent shopping! Saint-Emilion: Discover the amazing history and architecture, with superb medieval streets and buildings. The tourist office, offers a variety of guided tours both during the day and evening.

Talmont sur Gironde; an enchanting small town with narrow winding streets, set on a promontory overlooking the estuary. One of the most visited places on the estuary, built in the 13th century as a fortified village, the narrow streets are flanked by small white houses and hollyhocks.

Angouleme; a very old town with winding, cobbled streets and loads of history. Saintes, dating back to Roman times, also rich in history, with some nice medieval houses in typical narrow streets.

The zoo at La Palmyre near Royan has been one of the most-visited attractions in Poitou-Charentes ever since it opened in 1966. A family affair from the start, the La Palmyre Zoo has gone from strength to strength at its attractive forest location near the beaches of the Charente-Maritime.

Les Antilles water park at Jonzac is an indoor aquatic centre, one of the largest of its type in Europe, offering not just all-year-round swimming but slides, water toboggans, indoor beaches, beauty and fitness centres, tropical surroundings and great eating too.

Golf courses at Royan, Saintes, Cognac and Bordeaux. There is a 9-hole golf course in Montendre, approx. half an hour away. In the heart of the Royan region surrounded by the ocean, dunes and pines, the Maine Gaudin Golf Course is a wonderful 18-hole course. Laid out in the middle of the Coubre forest, at Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, this is a unique 3-par golf course with views over the ocean as well as a compact 6-hole course. At the tee of the fourteenth hole (a 167 metre 3-par hole) there is a unique viewpoint with panoramic views of the blue of the ocean, the Cordouan lighthouse and the tops of the trees. This course – also known as the Maine Beautiful Coast Golf Course – was created in 1977 at Maine Gaudin in the parish of Saint Palais-sur-Mer. In 1987, a further 9-hole course was created. The compact 6-hole course dates from 1992. In 2001, the Maine Gaudin Golf Course was taken into public ownership.

So, however you choose to spend your time, the Charente Maritime has plenty to offer everybody!
